Similar to the preparation of the burn strips, the setup of the burn testing is carried out exactly the same each time. This process is show in the video on the left. It involves attaching the emollient strip to a metal frame, and measuring frame height, flame height and flame intensity. Once this is all checked, the bunsen burner is moved underneath the strip and the time taken until the strip first ignites is measured.

100% Cotton Sheeting Burn Comparisons

Proban Burn Comparisons

Burn Test 01
Burn tests on 100% cotton fabric demonstrated a clear difference in ignition times when contaminated with a dried-on emollient. 1.25mL of emollient was applied to each sample and fully dried. The samples were ignited with an indirect flame. x2 speed was applied to the cotton blank video (left) due to a longer time to ignition.
Ignition occured in under 8 seconds with an emollient present
Burn Test 02
Proban® is a chemical treatment applied to cotton materials to make it less flammable. Once again, 1.25mL of emollient was applied to each sample and fully dried. x2 speed was applied to the Proban® blank video (left) because it doesn't ignite.
Proban® became flammable with an emollient present
Prep 01
All Emollient strips are prepared using the same process to ensure repeatability and accuracy. This process is shown by the video on the left and involves cleaning equipment, using a spatula to measure the amount of emollient and a roller to spread this emollient evenly along the strip, alongside weighing the strips before and after to determine the weight of the emollient applied. These strips are then left to dry fully.
